Sometimes bad things happen in order to promote change

Sitting here at the hospital creates a lot of brainstorming and reflecting but why wouldn’t it? Health and nutrition is already a big part of my life. I dove completely in while I was in college. However growing up I was always active and was fortunate to have parents who created a healthy upbringing.

The term healthy is different to everyone so please keep that in mind. All of my siblings were active and involved in sports. There was always a healthy dinner ready for us on the dinner table. The pantry was fully stocked with all types of food. Junk food was not scarce by any means but I am glad that was how it was. The fact that I was never told no to partaking in less than healthy choices made them not as appealing to me. Whenever I list the foods I do not care for I always get the craziest looks and responses. I will probably lose some readers after listing these! This list of dislikes didn’t start when I started living a healthier lifestyle I just have never cared for them.

  • Ice Cream
  • Doughnuts
  • Popcorn- – (like Kettle Corn)
  • Candy (always loved red licorice)
  • Potatoes/Fries/Mashed (I love yams though)
  • Ham
  • Beans
  • Rice
  • Anything Fried
  • Cake/Cupcakes (unless its homemade carrot cake)
  • Sour Cream or cream based sauces
  • Bread/Pasta
  • Soda
  • Chips (only tortilla chips)

There are definitely a lot of foods that are hard for me to say no to. I am far from perfect. However I am grateful that I care what goes in my body and the reasoning behind it. The reason why I am addressing this topic is why I am sitting in the Hospital. I am not in the hospital for myself but here with my Husband. We always joke about how he can eat anything and never gain a pound. But it isn’t always about what can happen to the outside of your body, i.e. gaining weight. After this past week he definitely got a wake up call in regards to what he puts in his body.

To see your spouse in so much pain is horrible. Especially when there is nothing you can do to help other than be there for them. Last Saturday we went to Urgent Care first and then admitted to the ER. Blood tests, ultra sounds, and a CT scan later we were sent home with no answers. He was prescribed medicine and pain killers. After so many tests that were inconclusive my trust in this system continued to decrease.

I’ve always believed that what and how you eat can cure more than medicine. I still believe that to a certain extent.

There is a time and place for each.

The test that was done a few days later finally gave us an answer. The HIDA test actually shows the functioning of the gallbladder. His gallbladder was functioning at 11%. They decided the gallbladder needed to be removed.

Almost a week later he had it removed. He is in a lot of pain and will be for a few days but his mindset has changed. His diet needs to change especially since he no longer has a gallbladder. The surgeon spoke with me while BHB was in the recovery room. His gallbladder was inflamed from built up cholesterol and fatty tissue. In the picture you could see how disgusting the build up really was.

I am about to show you the picture of his gallbladder so if you have a weak stomach scroll down.

Regardless of the comments you receive due to your eating habits it is important to understand why you eat the way you do. I definitely get my share of remarks and comments which can get to me but its my body not theirs. In a lot of situations a person might feel forced into eating healthier and they dread it. But taking the time to learn about living a healthy lifestyle and finding your why is crucial to maintaining your healthy lifestyle.

Not only do I eat healthy for myself and to achieve my fitness goals but I know that in the future I want to be a mom. Being able to carry a healthy baby is a priority to me. This can come off as selfish or vain but in order to be the best mom and wife I must take care of myself. My husband realizes how important his health is for himself, to me, and our future children.
